Write New Year resolutions;

boring, I decided to make it

fun for me yet work for my

parents to read. Not

understanding ration books

or scarce tangible items,

I took the special blue-color

roll of toilet paper and grabbed

a marker. A closed bedroom

door shut out radio’s sound

of World War II news.

Entire roll would have

one word a square. I began:

stop teasing my sisters;

complain less about helping

around the house. Giggling

imagining how tedious it was

going to be unrolling, I thought

it’d be an end to "I resolve".

Overhearing whispers about

valuable toilet paper with three

daughters, and the few color rolls

that reminded them the war

would end and such items then

easier to purchase, on New Year’s

Day, my parents smiled and

told me the method I’d used was

creative.

Granddaddy Santy Claus

Brenda Kay Ledford

SNOWFLAKES TWIRLED TO the ground like feathers and splashed on Granddaddy John Lee’s kitchen window. As time passed, Granddaddy got more anxious to leave for the Christmas play. "Hurry up, Trese. We’re going to be late."

     "Hold your horses, John," said my granny. "The play doesn’t start until 7:00."

     "I know, but the young’uns will be looking forward to seeing Santy Claus. By the way, where’s my Santy Claus suit?"

     "It’s just where you put it, darling." So Granny shuffles into the bedroom, gets Granddaddy’s suit off the bed and gives it to him. "How does that suit you?"

     "Where’s the Christmas presents, sweetheart?"

     "They’re just where I put them," said Granny, "on the table in the box."

     So Granddaddy and Granny climbed into the long, green Buick. Granddaddy drove up Tusquittee Road to the Christmas play. By the time they got to Shiloh Baptist Church, it was plum full of people. Some folks slid over and made room for them on the back bench. After the Christmas play, Granddaddy slipped out the backdoor and found a place to put on his Santy Claus suit.

      Directly there was a loud knock, knock, knock, on the backdoor. One of the deacons opened it. Santy Claus charged into the church. "Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas! Happy New Year! Have you been a good boy, son? How about you, little girl? Have you been good this year, Pastor?"

     As Granddaddy walked down the aisle, he handed out pokes of treats to each child. I looked in my bag and found an orange, an apple, peppermint candy canes, chocolate drops and hazel nuts.

     Each year Granddaddy dressed up like Santy Claus. Some folks believed he was the Jolly Old Man because he loved bringing joy to the mountain children. That was his present to the youth and the young at heart.
